The Decoy's Demise
Once this deadly decoy
Downed many a dainty duck.
Now, like some discarded toy,
The pigeon’s run out of luck!
Authentication Certificate
A water colour and poem sketched over breakfast in the conservatory for my dear friend Chris in memory of happy days with her wonderful Dad, who was a gamekeeper and artist. He sat at his easel in the very same spot. The decoy pigeon was just as he left it in the garden.

Catching the Tide
Outward bound upon the tide,
Under power with sails still furled,
Leeboards used for lack of keel,
Elegance of a bygone world.
Take the helm and with each turn of
the wheel,
Fathom the tales the Greta can tell,
As she sails out to sea,
Bidding Whitstable farewell.
Authentication Certificate
'Greta' putting to sea from Whitstable Harbour on the North Kent coast for a trip around the Isle of Sheppey on 2nd August, 2007. An ambition fulfilled, as I have long wanted to paint this magnificent
Thames Sailing Barge. Visit www.thamesbarges.co.uk

Innocence Betrayed
Bowie knife and blade,
Once tools of the trade
For youngsters bent on honing talents
Like whittling timber.
Just youthful pranks
With not a thought of malicious intent.
An innocence betrayed in these
dark days
Of indulgent excess and intemperate rage,
By volatile youths, tempers ablaze,
Flaunting blades to slash and to maim.
Authentication Certificate
These sheaf knives are mine. In my youth back in the 1950s, life was more relaxed and people were far more at ease with each other. As youngsters we were permitted to carry sheaf knives and used them in all innocence, perhaps to whittle away at wood. Then, come age 17 or 18 we'd lose interest in them. Not so today when, scarred by a society ill at ease with itself, malcontented youths carry knives if not with malicious intent then for self preservation.

My Mother
So honoured to have been her son,
So sad that she is gone,
Yet enthralled that her memory lives on.
With Honesty freshly gleaned,
Her bearing tells so much
About her gentle charm,
Soft nature and loving touch.
Authentication Certificate
The artist's mother,
Nora Louise Butler
1916 - 2003.
Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, yet to her family, simply Nan. Aged 70 she suffered an aneurysm and at that time was the oldest patient
to undergo life saving brain surgery
at London's Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead. Despite dire possibilities the operation was a great success and she lived life to the full for another 17 years. Accompanying her in this portrait is Sir Charles Carver, her favourite cockerel, who used to answer her call for a
handful of peanuts.

Inquisitive Heron
Stretched high against the sky,
Keen sight, eyes left, eyes right,
Style pert, gaze alert.
Inquisitive stance?
Or heron in a trance?
Authentication Certificate
Inspired by a precocious young heron perched one-legged on our rooftop
in late August, 2007.

Against the Flow
To row against the flow,
To strain against the tow,
Of bygone memories,
And then let go.
To breach the bridge
And reflect on pleasant hours
Spent on the Stour's
Quixotic stream.
Authentication Certificate
Inspired by an illusive yearning for youthful interludes spent on the River Stour at picturesque Fordwich village in East Kent. Not in those bygone days the comparative luxury of the inflatable dinghy.

Who's Crowing Now?
Bogie or Birdie
What's it to be?
Strut to the hole,
And putt for the match?
Or go for the snatch
And bunker the ball?
Raucously crowing,
"Let's handicap all"!
Authentication Certificate
A poem inspired by the crows that strut arrogantly to and fro over the Brocket Hall golf course greens in Hertfordshire. The poem in turn inspired the painting.

No Tesco!
There is no rush
Nor sign of crush.
In Wingham’s row
The pace is slow
And local produce
Is on show.
And praise be
There’s no Tesco!
Authentication Certificate
Tranquillity in the ancient, picturesque village of Wingham in East Kent, where locals shop at leisure, free from the cut and thrust of supermarket madness. In this case, the poem definitely came to mind before paint touched canvas.

Nature's awning
Spanning November skies.
Crisp, cool morning,
Red hot sunrise,
Heralding warning
Of Autumn's demise
And Winter's dawning.
